If you have a disability and need help to live more independently, you may be eligible for a grant to adapt your home.

You may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant, a discretionary grant, or both.

You can apply for a grant if you:

  • own your own home
  • are a housing association tenant
  • rent privately

You can use a grant to fund adaptations to your home such as:

  • ramps to entrance doors
  • stair lifts
  • level access showers
  • automatic toilets

Disabled Facilities Grant

The maximum amount of grant that we will pay is £30,000 per application.

For more information about eligibility and what you could get, please read Disabled Facilities Grants (GOV.UK)

Financial assessment

The amount you can receive from a Disabled Facilities Grant or discretionary grant is usually based on a financial assessment. This is a 'means test' of your average weekly income

If you have a partner, your combined income will be assessed jointly.

Capital is included in the means test, including savings above a certain limit.

There is no means testing for families of disabled children under 19.

Discretionary grant

We may be able to offer you a discretionary grant of up to £15,000 in certain circumstances outside of the usual rules for disabled facilities grants.

For more information about eligibility and what you could get, please read our  Private Sector Housing Assistance Policy (PDF). The section on discretionary grants begins on page 9.
