Shared Lives Carers provide support within their own homes, either on a long-term basis or through short respite stays. They can also offer floating support in another property for those who may only need low-level support.

We greatly value the role of Shared Lives Carers. We use the term ‘carer’ because this role goes beyond a landlord-tenant relationship: it’s about building friendship and trust, showing an interest in the individual, and helping them gain confidence and independence.

Who can be a Shared Lives Carer?

Shared Lives Carers come from all backgrounds and bring diverse life and work experiences. Some have worked in care roles, such as nursing or residential care, while others have no formal care background but have supported family members or started as co-carers before deciding to provide care from their own home.

Your personal skills and qualities, and ability to welcome and support someone into your home, are more important than previous experience. We provide full training to help you develop the skills you need, including the Care Certificate and Shared Lives-specific training.

What we’re looking for

A Shared Lives Carer should have an empowering personality, caring nature and willingness to help someone with practical and emotional support and to explore new opportunities.

To provide care in your home, you need to have:

  • a fully furnished bedroom of a good size
  • furnished communal spaces that you will share

We are particularly interested in applicants with ground-floor bedroom and bathroom facilities, to help support individuals with mobility issues

Carers can support up to three individuals in their home, depending on space.
