Premiums for empty properties and second homes
We charge an extra amount of Council Tax, called a “premium”, if your property is empty (unoccupied and substantially unfurnished) for more than one year or is classed as a second home.
We charge:
- 100% extra for properties that have been empty for 1 year or more from 1 April 2024
- 100% extra for properties that have been empty for 2 years or more from 1 April 2019
- 200% extra for properties that have been empty for 5 years or more from 1 April 2020
- 300% extra for properties that have been empty for 10 years or more from 1 April 2021
We charge 100% extra on properties classed as second homes with effect from 1 April 2025.
You may be able to apply for an exception to a Council Tax premium.
