To help children to be safe from traffic and high levels of air pollution, we have now expanded our school street programme to include the schools within the list below.

Cabinet member reports and decisions

Timetable

The school streets were rolled out during September and October 2020 under Experimental Orders. The statutory consultation generally runs for a period of 6 months. Due to the pandemic, the consultation period was extended. The consultation concluded on 31 July 2021. The Council intends to make a final decision by the 18th month of when the Experimental Orders were made. The Council is currently assessing all feedback received before making a final decision. All Cabinet Member decisions will be published accordingly.

ANPR enforcement started on 11 November 2020.

Some schools are now operating at different times that when the restrictions were first introduced. If a decision is made to make the individual affected school street permanent, a separate statutory consultation will be carried out to amend the hours of school street restrictions to reflect the school's hours.

Consultations 2020 (experimental)

The consultations linked to the Experimental Orders closed on 31 July 2021. We are currently considering responses before making a final decision.

Where necessary, 21-day Statutory consultations will be undertaken to change the hours of restrictions to reflect any change in school's new hours.

Benefits of school streets

  • Create a safer and more pleasant environment for families.
  • Encourages active travel to and from school, helping children lead healthier and more active lives.
  • Discourages Motor vehicle use which will reduce congestion, air pollution and carbon emissions. This will support a "green recovery".

Restricted times

Times of the restrictions vary (please see List of School Streets 2020). Restrictions will not operate during school holidays or at weekends. All vehicles already parked in the affected street will be able to leave at any time.

Exemptions

Local residents, businesses, teachers and parents who meet the necessary criteria are exempt subject to registration. All those directly affected by school streets have been sent the information on how to apply for an exemption.

Visitors and deliveries will not normally be permitted during restricted periods. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by case basis.

All emergency vehicles are exempt.
