The borough contains a rich heritage of buildings, which are of historical or architectural interest.
A number of these buildings have been recognised as having a very special architectural or historic interest and have been included on the statutory list that is compiled and managed by Historic England.
The list is frequently reviewed and changed and there are currently around 250 statutory listed buildings in Merton, many more are included on the locally listed buildings page.
The Statutory List not only includes buildings such as houses, churches, schools and underground stations, but also walls, tomb stones, milestones, ice houses, bridges and telephone and post boxes.
Check whether a building is on the statutory list
Historic England keep the statutory list up to date. Visit the Historic England website and use the search function to find out whether a building or structure is on the statutory list.
If you want to find all of the buildings and structures within Merton on the statutory list, use the "advanced search"; select "Greater London" as the county and "Merton" as the unitary authority
Please note that it is the council's responsibility to maintain and update Locally listed buildings.
Implications of listing
Once listed, a building has special protection under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and we have additional powers of protection. Extra responsibilities are also imposed on owners, for example any proposals involving the demolition of the building or alterations or extensions likely to affect its special historic interest will require Listed Building Consent. It is an offence to carry out works to a listed building without consent.
The Council has published a Supplementary Planning Guidance Note providing Information on the implications of listing and advice for owners of listed buildings which can be downloaded here.
