In honour of the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the Lantern Arts Choir will be holding a concert of Karl Jenkins’ work, including The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace on Saturday 12th April at 7.30pm. The Armed Man was voted 4th in the Classic FM Hall of Fame last year and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
The Armed Man was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium to mark the Museum’s move from London to Leeds, and was originally dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis. The Choir will be singing in English, French and Latin, and as well as the Mass, the text includes both sacred and secular poems.
The first half of the concert will contain other works by Karl Jenkins including some of his Motets and Palladio (recognisable from its use in adverts).
Sir Karl Jenkins CBE is, globally, among the most performed living composers, and in 2023 his music was played at the Coronation of King Charles III.
“The music of Karl Jenkins is a gift to humanity” – Terry Waite
The Lantern Arts Choir is the in-house choir at the Lantern Arts Centre, led by Stephen Hall OBE, who is also founder music director of the Civil Service Choir.
