In June 2010, investigations were carried out to assess traffic movements at the junction of Grand Drive and Bushey Road. Congestion was observed for north/southbound vehicles at its junction with Bushey Road. One of the main contributing reasons for this was poor carriageway positioning for vehicles turning right from Grand Drive. The queuing right turning traffic creates pinch points that obstructs the predominant straight-ahead traffic flows.
To improve the efficiency of the junction, the following traffic measures are proposed for implementation:
- Ban the eastbound right turn on Grand Drive - The purpose of this is to free up capacity in the middle of the junction allowing for the provision of a dedicated right turn lane for westbound traffic.
- Remove the traffic island on north arm of Grand Drive to improve lane discipline. By removing the island and banning the opposing right turn, a dedicated right turn lane can be introduced to accommodate excessive queues for westbound traffic. The existing arrangement only allows a maximum queue length of approximately 15 metres.
- Traffic signal improvements within the Raynes Park Corridor to improve the operation of the road network.
Please refer to the Grand Drive-Bushey Road plan Z90-01-01 plan for further information.
It is hoped that that the scheme will be introduced in March 2011.
