In partnership with Transport for London to improve bus journey times, TfL identified the proposed improvements for Figge's Marsh junction with London Road / Streatham Road / Lock's Lane.
The alterations primarily aim to enhance traffic flows, particularly for bus priority with added safety improvements for all road users. It provides better accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists and improvements to the public space.
The alterations comprise of the full re-construction of the junction and its islands with the installation of new traffic signals and control system. It includes new footways widened at the existing narrow areas; pedestrian crossing points aligned to suit more desirable routes to cross; advanced stop lines for cyclists; a No-Left turn ban from London Rd in to Streatham Rd restricting all heavy vehicles including buses; new street lighting and new street furnishings. The new footways will be resurfaced to a high quality natural paving material in keeping with the Figge's Marsh green.
What happens next
Update November 2019
Carriageway re-surfacing as the final stages of construction in London Road, Streatham Road and Lock's Lane, will be undertaken in multiple phases between 2 - 10 December 2019.
The work will be carried out in the evenings and early mornings, between the hours of 9pm and 4am. Temporary road closures and traffic diversions including re-routing of local buses will be in operation.
The Notice of Proposal and Notice of Making detailing the temporary road closures and diversions have been advertised.
In addition, the entrance to Eveline Road will be temporarily closed from Monday 25 Nov 2019 for 1 week for re-construction of the junction. A temporary two-way working will be in place for the entire length with parking suspended in certain places to provide passing gaps for vehicles.
Update 15 July 2019
The Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Environment and Housing has resolved and agreed to proceed with the making of the relevant TMOs following the statutory advertisement. See the relevant document links. TfL have also approved for the works to now start.
Works will be carried out in manageable stages commencing on the Monday 22 July 2019, with completion expected by Friday 20 December 2019. The final carriageway resurfacing and new road markings will be done in phases in December 2019 and you will be notified closer to time of the various road closures and diversion that will be in place. The majority of work will generally be carried out on Mondays to Fridays, between the hours 8am and 5pm, except for the carriageway re-surfacing, which will be done in evenings between 9pm and 4am.
The only element of the scheme subject to statutory consultation includes a no-left turn ban, except for vehicles under 7.5t, from London Road into Streatham Road.
The notice of our intention to introduce the turning ban has been published in the local newspaper and posted on lamp columns in the vicinity. Any comments must be put in writing by no later than 7 June 2019, quoting reference ES/FIGGESMARSH addressed to:
