Mitcham town centre regeneration project

Mitcham town centre is an important focal point for the east side of the borough. It is where residents, workers and visitors come together to shop, work, socialise and access services. We want to shape the future of the town centre together with Mitcham’s communities to create a place we are proud to call home.

The town centre is facing challenges as consumer habits continuously develop. The impact of these changing trends was exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. It left high streets and town centres nationwide with a dwindling markets and vacant shops. However, Mitcham’s unique character, made up of its proactive communities and its existing infrastructure, provides an optimistic and positive backdrop for its future.

We are investing in the revitalisation of Mitcham that celebrates its strong local identity – a neighbourhood for everyone – those who have called Mitcham home for decades, years or months. With the appointment of a Mitcham town centre manager in the summer of 2023, the following work has been undertaken to boost Mitcham’s civic pride.

Mitcham Matters consultation report

We undertook a big conversation with Mitcham residents in 2023/24 through the ‘Mitcham Matters’ consultation. It sought views on how we could improve the town centre while maintaining Mitcham’s strong local identity and heritage. Almost 700 people from all age groups responded to the consultation, and a focused survey with young people had almost 100 responses. People shared their views on what they thought would improve public spaces, particularly in the town centre and Market Square. It highlighted a need for more greenery, vibrant public spaces and events, family-friendly areas, and new places for local people to spend time. Over the past year, we have responded to residents’ feedback and will continue to do so.

Printed copies can also be found in Mitcham Library, Canons House and Vestry Hall.

Recent projects

Mitcham market banners

In collaboration with Mitcham based artists, POoR Collective, new market banners have been co-designed with residents who were asked to draw things they would like to buy from the market during a drop-in workshop at the market. A special banner highlights the names of the residents who contributed to this project.

Sibthorpe planting

Planting around Sibthorpe car park to improve the look and feel and levels of biodiversity have been completed. Students of St Marks Primary School and members of the Mitcham Society provided a helping hand in this project.

Bulb planting

Improved planting around the Fair Green and other underused green spaces in the town centre using a rich mix of bulbs took place in November. The same mix of bulbs were given out to invite residents to plant a bit of Mitcham at home. This project was funded using the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
