The Merton Memories Project: Resources for Merton Schools
As part of the Merton Memories Project, a local history initiative supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Merton Heritage Service has produced a range of teaching resources for use by Merton schools. These give an insight into life in Merton over the past 150 years and can be used to show how the area has developed, technological advances and the impact of social change on the lives of ordinary people.
Packs have been tailored to the new history curriculum and have been developed following consultation meetings and feedback from Merton teachers. They are aimed at primary schools but some material may also be of interest to secondary teachers.
There are 3 packs. Each pack contains:
- A range of introductory information
- Photo packs containing Merton images, historical information, census extracts and quotes from local people
- Map extracts to demonstrate change over time
- A range of teaching notes including contextual information; useful websites, teaching outcomes and suggested sites for class visits
We have used seven core topic themes across each pack:
- Houses and Homes
- Schools and Education
- Work and Industry
- Shops and Street Scenes
- Transport
- Sport and Leisure
- War
Each area pack also contains a local topic
- Merton and Morden Pack - Nelson
- Mitcham Pack – Mitcham Fair
- Wimbledon Pack – Wimbledon Common
